120th Anniversary of Kyōsai’s Passing – Reprint from Kyōsai Rakuga
Kyōsai Rakuga was originally published in 1881 by Tokyo publishers Takeda Den’emon and Morita Tetsugorō. Later, Kyoto’s Unsōdō acquired the printing blocks and reissued the work. Now, after 130 years since its first edition, this woodblock print series has been reprinted once again.

Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831–1889) was a Japanese painter known for his dynamic and often humorous works. He studied under the Kano school but developed his own distinctive style, blending traditional techniques with bold, expressive brushwork. Kyōsai depicted a wide range of subjects, including kabuki actors, supernatural beings, and political satire. His art, influenced by ukiyo-e and Western styles, remains highly regarded for its energy and creativity.
